Director of Sportsbook (Malta)

Our Malta-based client is looking for a Director of Sportsbook to lead sportsbook strategy, commercial performance and operations, with practical AI expertise at the centre of the role.

The business operates a sportsbook and casino built on its own technology platform, combining an automated sportsbook with a strong focus on player experience across web and mobile.

Reporting to the C-suite, you will own sportsbook performance, lead teams across trading, risk and event management, and work closely with Product, Technology and Data to develop differentiated betting experiences. You will also champion practical AI adoption across the wider business.

This opportunity suits an experienced sportsbook leader who combines commercial accountability with a hands-on approach to technology. Applicants must have personally built and tested working AI models, agents, automations or AI-enabled workflows.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

AI Leadership and Innovation

• Build, test and deploy AI models, agents and automations across sportsbook operations and other business functions.

• Connect AI tools to company data and systems to generate insights, improve decisions and reduce manual work.

• Identify practical opportunities for AI across trading, risk, reporting, product and operational processes.

• Challenge assumptions, validate AI outputs and measure results against clear business objectives.

• Establish appropriate human oversight and accountability for AI-supported decisions.

• Share knowledge and help colleagues adopt AI tools effectively.

Sportsbook Strategy and Commercial Performance

• Own sportsbook strategy, roadmap and commercial performance, including net gaming revenue, margins, trading results and operating efficiency.

• Set commercial priorities and translate them into measurable objectives and delivery plans.

• Monitor performance, investigate changes in results and implement improvements.

• Identify growth opportunities within licensed markets through market insight, competitor analysis and emerging player trends.

• Manage provider relationships, commercial negotiations, contract terms and vendor selection.

• Balance revenue growth, player experience and long-term profitability.

Trading, Risk and Operations

• Oversee trading, pricing, risk appetite, player profiling, market coverage and settlement.

• Identify exposure, unprofitable activity and operational bottlenecks, using data and automation to improve performance.

• Maintain effective risk controls and ensure operational decisions support regulatory compliance and player protection.

• Ensure appropriate oversight of AI-driven processes within a regulated betting environment.

• Develop staffing and coverage plans aligned with the sporting calendar.

• Improve operational processes while maintaining accuracy, reliability and service quality.

Team Leadership

• Lead a lean, high-performing team across trading, risk and event management.

• Establish clear KPIs, responsibilities and accountability.

• Develop team capability through coaching, knowledge sharing and practical support.

• Encourage experimentation, continuous improvement and sound judgement.

• Ensure the team combines effective automation with human expertise.

Product and Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Partner with Product, Technology, Data and UX to shape priorities and deliver sportsbook improvements.

• Develop AI-powered capabilities that strengthen the player experience and commercial performance.

• Improve promotional mechanics and sportsbook features, balancing engagement, margin and long-term customer value.

• Work closely with Marketing, CRM, Casino and Compliance on a coordinated commercial plan.

• Provide the executive team with clear reporting, forecasts and actionable recommendations.

CRITERIA

Applicants must have:

• Hands-on AI building experience: Personally built and tested working models, agents, automations or AI-enabled workflows using tools such as Claude Code, GPT or similar. This is a core requirement.

• Proven sportsbook leadership: Senior experience within a regulated sportsbook, with a track record of owning commercial performance and delivering against P&L targets.

• Strong commercial knowledge: A thorough understanding of sportsbook economics, trading, pricing, margins, risk and player behaviour.

• Practical AI adoption experience: Evidence of applying AI to business challenges, driving adoption and helping colleagues work more effectively.

• Analytical capability: Confidence working with data, testing assumptions and making timely, well-supported decisions.

• Collaborative leadership: The ability to lead teams and work effectively across commercial, product and technical functions.

• Regulatory awareness: A solid understanding of regulated markets, compliance obligations and player protection.

ADVANTAGEOUS EXPERIENCE

• 10+ years of experience in sports betting.

• Experience integrating AI tools into a sportsbook platform.

• UK Gambling Commission regulatory experience; experience in other regulated jurisdictions is also welcome.

• Experience using Metabase.

• Personal AI projects that can be demonstrated and discussed at interview.
